The role of vitamins: A few words
The general consensus today is that balanced as they may be, it is challenging for our meals alone to meet our body’s daily vitamin and mineral requirements. This is further complicated by the fact that so many of us are on life’s treadmill, where slowing down seems to mean speeding up. Food supplementation is certainly a good choice to help keep one’s body working at its optimum. On that note, supplements (vitamins) that are laden with chemicals and other harmful additives profit nothing and, in the end, cause harm. You will want to research the company whose label you purchase or are considering purchasing, to ensure that it is reputable.…

Tips to help your overall well-being
Sleep Restorative sleep helps you to avoid feeling lethargic all day and helps you to concentrate better. It also gives your body the opportunity to rejuvenate. A lack of sleep, especially over time, will not only mount the fatigue but cause your health to suffer. If you find yourself stressed, on an emotional roller coaster, and/or unable to concentrate, check the amount of sleep you’ve been averaging. Seven to 8 hours per night is still the recommendation that will help you reap the best overall benefits. Eat well The busyness of life has resulted in more and more people regularly grabbing a quick fast food or packaged meal for dinner.…

Suggestions to enhance exercise routines
You’ve been exercising diligently and it’s evident! Of late, however, it seems you’ve hit a plateau; often the result of the body becoming acclimated to expected routines. Changing your workout plans will help you to keep the body guessing so it does not get used to the routine. For example, implement sets of bodyweight exercises such as burpees, lunges, and crunches. This will burn energy and tone muscles. Skip the weight machines, and add some free weights. Instead of the treadmill, join a number of different exercise classes. Then, top it all off with the addition of free weights. Intervals When it comes to burning calories, interval workouts are very…

Men’s health: Starting with the brain
Are you, like so many others, finding yourself getting a little lax in the memory department? If so, this is likely linked to the natural path of aging. The fact of the matter is that as we age, our brain capacity decreases due to the natural death of brain cells. However, exercise and fitness have been shown to help alleviate and, at times, even reverse the effects of cognitive decline. The two mechanisms behind the brain boost: Improvement of blood flow to the brain: Reduced blood flow can lead to starvation/ poor perfusion of the cells in the brain, causing “hypoxia” known as oxygen starvation. In the process, essential nutrients…

Berries combat oxidative stress
Berries, which are known to pack vitamins A (Beta-Carotene), B complex, C, and E, also reduce inflammation (linked to the cause of all disease) and boost the immune system. Hailed for their antioxidant qualities, these vitamins provide a good line of defense against the effects of oxidative stress. Chronic diseases including certain cancers, diabetes, and heart disease can stem from oxidative stress. Here is a helpful Berry tip sheet provided by Berkley Wellness. What is Oxidative Stress? Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants. ~ Ananya Mandal,…

National Nutrition Month
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics hosts a yearly campaign for National Nutrition Month in March. This year’s theme is “Put Your Best Fork Forward.” The idea behind this theme is that we should start with small changes, one day at a time. While eating healthy and well is huge and, in fact, key to one’s overall nutritional well-being, food alone may not be enough. If you want to feel better with more energy and vitality, lose weight, experience better digestion, or less stress, I invite you to place an order with the number 1 nutrition company in the United States, the Shaklee Corporation. Started 100 years ago, Shaklee is…

Boomers: Start today preparing for tomorrow
If you were born between 1946 and 1964, you are known as a baby boomer. It would be wonderful if we who are approaching late middle age, heading towards our golden years, could just stop the clock. Since that’s impossible, we can and absolutely should make it our business and priority to improve our health and well-being. To say it yet again; time is fleeting. It just doesn’t last as long as we would like it to. Although it may seem like just yesterday that you were raising your children, those years have passed and now they are raising their own children. As the clock continues to tick, if…
