Menopause is no joke

Managing menopausal symptoms with renewed perspective

Our society is not short on jokes. Unfortunately, they include menopause. The symptoms that often accompany menopause aren’t a laughing matter to those who experience them. Some women notice hot flashes, as one of the first signs. This is a common symptom that brings an increase in temperature to the face and chest. Individuals feel hot and as if their skin is burning. Hot flashes can cause night sweats to the point that a change of clothes and even linen is necessary.

Menopause can also cause a lack of interest in sex, vaginal dryness, a loss of sleep and moodiness. The moodiness can result in outbursts of temper, shortness, and being easily irritated. It can also cause depression. The good news is that there are ways to manage the symptoms of menopause so that they don’t disrupt life.

Since hot flashes can happen randomly, make sure that you’re dressed in lightweight clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Avoid tight fitting clothes that trap body heat. You’ll also want to make sure that your home and office temperatures are set lower than normal.

Some women have found relief going naturally with the use of alternative therapies like health supplements and herbs. Acupuncture is also being successfully used to treat hot flashes.

In terms of mood swings, during menopause, one of the first things to consider is the amount of sleep one is getting. A lack of sleep can worsen mood swings. Stay engaged in activities of interest and find ways to connect with other women who understand this stage of life, for the emotional support; that which you’ll both receive and give.

If you’re struggling with vaginal dryness, a very common symptom of menopause, consider over the counter lubricants. Lastly, hair loss due to menopause can certainly be a nuisance. If it’s any consolation, the hair typically grows back, once menopause ends. So, get on with life. Enjoy this and every stage of life! Menopause can indeed just be a bump in the road instead of a sink hole. It’s all about the approach and perspective.
